Colorado Community Theatre Coalition FestivalLocal theater groups place first, second in state festival By: Mandi Bollinger SUMMIT COUNTY - Twelve community theatre companies descended on Summit County for the 10th Annual Colorado Community Theatre Coalition Festival last week, and after an intense weekend of 12 powerful plays, the two host companies took the top two awards. The festival featured acting workshops and competitive one-hour theatrical pieces. During an awards ceremony Sunday, first place went to Breckenridge's Backstage Theatre for "Waiting for the Parade" and second place went to the Lake Dillon Theatre Company's "No Exit." "I think it's a tremendous comment on the quality of work in this county and the dedication of the local theatre community that we did so well," said Wendy Moore, who earned best director and best set design for "Waiting for the Parade." "There is an incredible amount of work that goes into taking these shows to competition." Both the Backstage and Lake Dillon theatre companies are eligible to take the shows to the regional competition in Aspen this October. The winners of that competition will go on to a national competition in Memphis, Tenn. in spring, 1999. Representatives of community theatres state-wide participate in the CCTC festival. About 175 representatives from community theatres like Evergreen, Littleton and Glenwood Springs showed up. More than 200 members of the public attended the competitive shows, a slight decrease over last year's event in Aspen but an overall increase. "We had great support from the public," said Wendy Tennis, festival coordinator. Both local theatre companies hosted this year's festival. Tennis praised the event as one of the most successful. "It was so well received," she said. "It got all sorts of wonderful feedback. There is usually some sort of glitch, but with representatives of two theatres and volunteers from the public helping, everything ran like clockwork." Moore also earned best set director for "Parade." Jean Williams - Inez in the Lake Dillon Theatre Company's production of "No Exit" - was named the festival's best actress. A number of Summit County performers also earned all-state honors, making them eligible to perform in next year's all-state play. "No Exit" actors Williams, Poke Keithley and Bonnie DeChant and "Parade" actors Suzanne Pedersen, Allison Morton, Lennie Singer, Elgin Kelley and Monica Banks earned all-state honors. Moore also earned best director and set design for all-state. Littleton's Main St. Players took third place for "Lovers," the Evergreen Players' Gary Sohrweid was named best actor for his role in "Greater Tuna," and Trudy Maurico and Kristin Andersen took best costume designers for "Greater Tuna." The Backstage Theatre, founded in 1976, has competed in the Colorado Community Theatre Coalition Festival since 1991 and placed in the top three every year. This is the third time winning third place production. |
